Todmorden Open Studios – TOS – was started in 2014. The number of artists and makers in Todmorden and the surrounding area had grown considerably and people wanted to get together to publicise their range of skills and talents.
The event has grown and flourished and draws a lot of visitors to the town.
The event includes a wide range of artists and makers. Disciplines include; ceramics, drawing, fibre art, film, fine art painting, glassware, hand thrown pottery, illustration, installation, jewellery, mixed media, mosaics, papier mâché, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, willow sculpture and video.
The first year we connected with the Tour de France events going on in Yorkshire Summer 2014.
In 2017 there were fifty artists exhibiting, as well as venues around the town. There were three galleries taking part – Water Street Art Gallery, Legacy Arts and Creative with Nature. Other venues included The Old Library community space in Cornholme and Staff of Life Public house in Lydgate.
Todmorden Open Studios is an open group, open to any artists in the Todmorden area to take part. Visiting artists are also welcome to exhibit and a list of venues is provided if they are unable to secure their own exhibiting arrangements.
Artists are available throughout the event at their own, or exhibiting, venue and are happy to discuss their work. The artwork is for sale and it is an opportunity to buy direct from the artist as well as get a fascinating insight into the workings of an artist’s studio. Some studios are independent and some are group studios.
The event is free to visitors. We produce a free map and brochure, which are available at Information Centres and Libraries and also widely distributed across Yorkshire, Lancashire and Manchester, etc. The map details accessibility at each venue.
We have an online presence on Facebook and Instagram (type ‘Todmorden Open Studios’). Most artists have a website or other online presence, which we link in with our social media and other publicity material during the event.
We are a lively and vibrant group. We have always had good responses with many artists involved. The organising, for which all artists are encouraged and has rewarding benefits, runs throughout most of the year with regular meetings. TOS is run very much by the people who join in and the event also works really well as a social and networking opportunity.
